There’s so much happy laughing RafaLint out there. I’m in a bit of a hurry because I’m doing my final prep for my trip to Seville. Feel free to add comments to this with links to more fun stuff you find. I can’t promise how much I’ll post while away - I have a city to see and The Armada to cheer for!

Anyone up for a super long Radio interview with the teams? Man, I wish I spoke Spanish. This article pulls a few quotes from the interview (mangle). And…you have to see the smiley photos. No, really. You have to.

Done? Okay. Let’s move on.

  • Rafa had a late night (at least, I think night. The mangle says pm, but it seems more like he was saying midnight): “12 pm and our physios Luis and Julian are still working and Feli and Rafa recovering after a hard day. All equipment to top”
  • Sebastian Fest tweeted a photo from his interview with Rafa.

Looking at how bundled up everyone is in the practice sessions, I’m starting to think my hoodie won’t be enough. *sigh* And…I still haven’t decided what lens to bring. Quality vs. reach…always a toughie. Oh well, need to get to sleep. It’s going to be a long day tomorrow! Looking forward to seeing some of you guys in Sevilla!

WTF: RR3 presser

Video of part of the presser via the ATP:

Full presser transcript:

Q. Can you give us your thoughts on that match and how well Jo played, how difficult it was against him tonight.

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, first thing I have to talk about myself. I think I didn’t play well tonight. The first two sets I didn’t play bad, but I didn’t play well, and to win these kind of matches you have to play well. I played without nothing special tonight, no?

Jo knows where I hit every ball during the point. I didn’t had surprise shots during all the match. So that’s very difficult at this level, no?

I was solid, but to slow with the legs. The forehand didn’t had enough pain to him. And backhand normal, okay?

After the second set, the end of the second set, I was in a little bit better position than him. At the beginning of the third, the same. But I didn’t play enough well. When I felt the match was little bit more to me than to him, beginning of the third, I played little bit too anxious to win that match.

So that’s what happened. If the two first sets wasn’t bad, but wasn’t good, the third was disaster. That’s the true, no?

He’s a dangerous player. For sure is not easy to play against him, big serve, aggressive player. To play against these kind of players, you have to do something else more, no, and I didn’t.

Best of luck for him. Congratulations to Jo. He deserved tonight more than me.

Q. Do you feel that you haven’t been at your very best form since the US Open? If so, why would that be?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, in the Davis Cup of Spain after US Open, I played great. In Tokyo I played one of my best sets of the year against Murray, the first set. Yeah, after that wasn’t my best, that’s true.

Q. Why is that?

RAFAEL NADAL: Seriously I can talk one hour for that. Is because of lot of things. Because probably I was little bit less passion for the game probably because I was a little bit more tired than usual.

I happy how I practiced last three weeks. That’s the true. Very happy with the right attitude to play tennis. That’s important because I was in the right way. But to compete I wasn’t in the right way.

We can find excuses, we can find problems for more time, but is not the moment to say that. Is the moment to, you know, still fighting. Is the moment to say the season is over. I had good season. Happy for that. Not happy about a few things during the season.

And now is the moment to analyze little bit more what I did good, what I did bad, and for sure know in what about I have to practice for the next month. That’s all.

Watch through the Australian Open and have the right practice, continue with the right practice like I had the last three weeks. And that’s the only way to try to arrive to the 2012 season with the right conditions. That’s about I dream, try to arrive in 2012 with very good conditions, and I going to practice and I going to do it all in my hands to be perfect for the beginning of 2012.

This end of the year wasn’t easy for me. That’s hard to accept. But at the same time that’s give me little bit more of illusion and little bit more goal for the beginning of 2012. That’s what I going to try.

Q. How confident are you that you can recover your form in time for the Davis Cup?

RAFAEL NADAL: We’ll see. I don’t know. I don’t know.

That’s completely different conditions. I going to be for one week practicing on clay. Even if I am not playing perfect, the surface help me. Because sometimes little bit more about confidence, sometimes little bit more about the movement. I was a little bit slower than usual, but I think I was a little bit slower than usual because my mind wasn’t perfect, so the reaction was late.

So on clay I have more time to think. The movements are a little bit easier for me. I going to have the right team there supporting me and practicing hard. I will be try my best every day to try to win the Davis Cup for my country. I’m lucky, the team, not only myself, if I’m not in the right conditions, the captain can choose another player.

Q. How eager are you still to be out there competing? It’s not been a particularly easy year for you. Is your level of confidence and eagerness to get out there and play still as strong as it’s ever been?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, this year was a tough year for me, no? I think was positive one for moments, but at the same time was hard for moments. Accept what happen during all the season, needs time for the think.

The only thing, the only important thing, today I say I didn’t have big expectations for this tournament. I know how I arrive. Always you dream that the situation can change. If I win today, you never know.

But the thing, the normal thing, is what happened. Accept, the only way to accept. And I know only one way to change situation is to work more, think more about tennis, do everything in the right shape, do everything good inside the court, everything good outside the court. And that’s what I going to try to do for the next month and for the rest 12 months of 2012. That’s what I can say. That’s what I can do.

If one player do better than me or another player is better than me, accept, congratulate the opponent. But what I have to do is try to arrive to my best, to be with calm with myself. That’s all.

That’s what I feel today I didn’t, and I need to do for next year.

Q. Are there similarities with 2009?

RAFAEL NADAL: Oh, no, no.

Q. How is it different?

RAFAEL NADAL: Completely different situation, I think. First of all, I never like to compare the situations. But second thing, you know, 2009, I had different kind of problems. This year is a completely different year.

Is not the same situation, especially because I am two years older (smiling).

Q. You were saying a little while ago about the passion had dropped a little bit. Has that happened before to this extent like you’ve experienced this time? While you were going through that, how frustrating was it?

RAFAEL NADAL: Oh, ‘frustration’ is not the right word for me. I am happy. I am here. I qualified like No. 2 of the world for the World Tour Finals. I am here playing in a fantastic stadium. I never dreamed about that if you tell me 15 years before.

So frustration is another things.

In your career you have moments here, you have moments here, you come back, you go down. And today is not my best moment because I need not a lot of things. Because the experience says me to change are just small things, but these small thing change at the end of the day a lot of things.

That’s what I have to do: work hard, working hard every day, morning, afternoon. I going to have my chance for next year to be competitive to win the big tournaments.

My illusion is there. My motivation I hope the same. I will do it. If not enough, is not going to be enough. But I will be satisfied with myself.

See you next year.

WTF: So long, London

Today’s round robin match was essentially the equivalent of a quarterfinal: winner moves on, loser doesn’t. Nice and simple, no scenarios or math to perform. With so much on the line, the match felt pretty lackluster from both of the guys, but more so from Rafa. He showed signs of life in the second set, but went back to missing routine looking shots in the third. Basically, Tsonga was playing well; Rafa looked like a tired guy playing on his least favorite surface. Tsonga wins: 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3.

It felt imperative that Rafa come out fighting and not let the streaky Tsonga get into a groove. That’s not quite how things started, though. Rafa’s service games were struggles with him not winning rallies and having every second serve demolished by Tsonga. Rafa managed to hang in to force a tiebreak, but it was all Tsonga then. First set Tsonga: 7-6(2).

Rafa stepped it up a bit in the second or Tsonga got a little flat…or it was a bit of both. Either way, it took until the 10th game of the match for either player to get break points. It took three, but Rafa broke and took the second: 6-4.

Even though the momentum appeared to be on Rafa’s side, he served a sloppy game at 1-1 and was broken. Rafa missed some easy shots into the open court and was soon down two breaks. Tsonga choked while serving for the set and Rafa got one break back. Every the nice boy, Rafa gifts a break back and Tsonga wins.

Stats:

As it happened blatherings:

I’m very unprepared for this! Slept too late, decided to exercise before the match, did a short version and was still lying on the mat stretching when the players took the court. Oye.

Gimmelstob saying Rafa has the flu?

Match hasn’t started and Arias is up to his 3rd mention of a physical style damaging Rafa’s game/longevity so far. It should be a drinking game.

Tsonga runs Rafa back and forth until Rafa runs out of time and sends a shot long. Tsonga holds: 1-0.

So far, Tsonga winning the rallies. Man, that was an excellent return of 2nd serve from Tsonga. Rafa HAS to get his first serves in. A good first serve and Rafa holds for 1-1.

Strong hold for Tsonga for 2-1.
SI_BTBaseline: Man. Rafa looks ordinary. #noswag

Rafa sends a forehand long: 0-15. Fierce forehand return of second serve from Tsonga gives him control of the point and he finishes it off: 0-30. Tsonga brings Rafa in with a drop shot, Rafa gets to it, but misses the reply to the passing shot: 15-40. Rafa challenges a call on Tsonga’s return and Rafa is correct. One break point saved. A good serve saves another: deuce. Another dropper from Tsonga and then a lob, but Rafa hangs in, runs back and hits an awesome spinning forehand: game point. And Rafa holds.

Another strong hold for Tsonga. 3-2

Rafa sends a forehand long: 0-15. Another dropshot/lob combo, but Tsonga comes out on top this time: 0-30. Tsonga’s backhand is long: 15-30. Lovely volley at the net. Tsonga pissed about something. Ah, Mo called not-up, but Tsonga did get to the ball in time. It’s 30-30 anyway. Nice passing shot from Rafa: 40-30. Rafa holds – I think his best hold so far in the match.
Fierce forehand down the line winner from Tsonga: 15-0. Ace: 30-0. Again: 40-0. Tsonga holds: 4-3.

Ataraxis00: Is Rafa determined to play every game from behind?

Nice passing shot from Rafa: 15-15.

SI_BTBaseline: Rafa’s starting to pump himself up now. Seems to have a gauge on his passers. Still, service games are a bit of an adventure.

Tsonga nets a backhand return of serve: 40-15. Nice forehand on the run from Tsonga, but Rafa manages to block it back to stay in the point. He goes on to win it and hold for 4-4.

Rafa’s backhand return of serve almost lands outside of the doubles alley: 15-0. Tsonga’s drop shot attempt lands on his side of the net…middle of the service box: 15-15.

Ataraxis00: I’d drop shot him too if he insists on standing back far enough to hear the conversations in the crowd.

Ace: 30-15. Rafa attempts to pass, but Tsonga hits a wonderfully angled volley winner: 40-15. Rafa’s forehand lands in the middle of the doubles alley and Tsonga, once again, holds easily: 5-4.

Nice backhand winner from Tsonga: 0-15. Weird. I agree with Arias…Rafa’s running around the backhand too much and getting himself too far out of position. Tsonga’s shot is out: 15-15. Oh, that was a fun point – both players showing their reflexes. Sadly, ends with Tsonga getting a great cross-court winner off of a passing attempt from Rafa: 15-30. Deep forehand from Rafa draws an error: 30-30. Service winner down the middle: 40-30. Rafa holds for 5-5.

Tsonga’s ball is well out: 40-30. Tsonga holds for 6-5. Rafa will serve to force a tiebreak.

So far, Tsonga’s been winning everything but the big points. He gets ahead on Rafa’s serve, but can’t capitalize on it.

How did Rafa get that back…much less in? Nice. Excellent hold for Rafa. Tiebreak time.

Tsonga paints the line with a forehand winner: 1-0. Rafa to serve two. Tsonga hits deep, Rafa doesn’t, but Tsonga can’t do anything with Rafa’s passing shot: 1-1. Tsonga’s pass is out, but Rafa touched the ball, so point and mini-break to Tsonga: 2-1. Tsonga gives it back by double faulting: 2-2. Tsonga volleys a winner off Rafa’s passing attempt: 3-2. Tsonga tees off on a slice backhand from Rafa, comes into the net and hits a winning volley - mini-break to him: 2-4. Rafa nets a forehand: 2-5. Tsonga into the net and handles all that Rafa can throw at him: 2-6. With an ace, Tsonga emphatically wins the first set: 7-6(2).

65 minutes; 65% 1st serves in; 79% won on 1st; 40% won on 2nd; 6 winners; 7 UFEs; 1/5 won at net

Ataraxis00: Jo with the first set. Sealed it with an ace. Rafa has to get aggressive or go home. This short ball defensive stuff isn’t working.

TheFanChild: Rafa is first on the Tour at winning second serve points (57%) but he’s won a paltry 40% today. #WTF

Tsonga sends a volley well long: 30-0. Good hold by Rafa to start set 2.

Ace: 15-0. Tsonga hit a fierce forehand – Rafa didn’t even seem to attempt to track it down: 30-0. Tsonga nets a forehand: 30-15. Tsonga into the net, Rafa attempts a lob, Tsonga jumps up and hits a high one-handed backhand volley winner: 40-15. Tsonga nets a backhand: 40-30. Looks like Rafa tripped a bit trying to run around a backhand to return serve. Tsonga holds for 1-1.

Deep forehand from Tsonga and Rafa sends his forehand into the net: 0-15. Good serve, into the net, winner: 15-15.

Ataraxis00: Good grief. That was the first aggressive point I can recall from Rafa in this match.

Error from Tsonga: 30-15. Serve out wide draws an error: 40-15. With a second serve ace (?!) out wide, Rafa holds for 2-1.

Thing I liked about that game? A few change-ups from Rafa.

Ataraxis00:Open court or not he’s stuck in attack the backhand mode. RT @FootFault_: You are allowed to change the direction of the ball, Rafael.

Rafa attempting more aggressive play now, but Tsonga out-gunning him: 30-0. Double fault: 30-15. Tsonga sends a forehand well out: 30-30. Tsonga into the net and hits a winner: 40-30. Rafa nets a forehand passing shot attempt and Tsonga holds for 2-2. (That was such a make-able shot. *sigh*)

Tsonga’s return is long: 15-0. Ace: 30-0. Another shot out by Rafa: 30-15. Tsonga can’t handle the serve: 40-15. Tsonga sends a 2nd serve return back to the lines people and Rafa holds comfortably: 3-2.

Tsonga nets a forehand: 0-15. Tsonga runs and gets a new racket. Rafa’s loopy second serve return sails long: 15-15. Forehand winner from Tsonga; Rafa challenges the call. Call was good: 30-15. Nice passing shot from Rafa. Tsonga stretches, but seem to be surprised the shot was down the line: 30-30. Excellent serve, high return from Rafa, Tsonga knocks off a winner: 40-30. With an ace, Tsonga holds for 3-3.

SI_BTBaseline: Through 19 games there have been no breaks of serve. Rafa hasn’t earned a break point yet, Tsonga’s had two.

Rafa goes for a cross-court forehand, but it’s wide: 0-15. Rafa working Tsonga for a change. Finishes point with a forehand winner: 15-15. Tsonga mishits a ball that pops up off the baseline: 30-15. Forehand winner? Tsonga challenges, but call is good: 40-15. Good hold for 4-3 from Rafa.

Beautiful angled volley at the net from Tsonga: 30-0. Tsonga nets a forehand: 30-15. Rafa sends a return of serve long: 40-15. Nice flat backhand down the line (took the ball on the rise) and Tsonga can’t do a thing with it: 40-30. Rafa’s forehand was long; he challenges despite everyone (linesman, Mo and Tsonga) saying it was out. And…it’s out. Tsonga holds for 4-4.

SI_BTBaseline: Through 8 games, Rafa’s actually won 4 more points than Jo. Yes, I’m now looking at stats. That’s how frustrating this match is right now.

Long forehand handcuffs Tsonga: 15-0. Rafa set up his point well, but a stunning passing shot from Tsonga: 15-15. 15-30. Second serve. Tsonga nets a forehand: 30-30. Second serve. Tsonga’s cross-court backhand is just out (would have been a winner if in, I think): 40-30. Rafa tees off on a forehand and nets it: deuce. Nice serve down the middle, nice forehand from mid-court: game point. (Replay shows the ball was out…lucky Tsonga didn’t challenge.) Tsonga’s return is long and Rafa holds for 5-4. Fist pump and a Vamos! from Rafa.

Second serve. Rafa runs down a deep forehand, but is late and sends his shot well wide: 15-0. Tsonga’s forehand is long: 15-15. Second serve. Let. Tsonga nets a backhand: 15-30. Error from Tsonga: 15-40.

SI_BTBaseline: Rafa’s doing that thing where he’s hopping up and down and letting Tsonga know he smells blood. This is so going three.

Fierce forehand and following smash from Tsonga saves one: 30-40. Another looping passing shot followed by a smash: deuce. Second serve, beautiful return and Rafa earns another set point. Knee up Vamos from Rafa. Loopy return, Tsonga smashes it for a winner: deuce. Second serve. Tsonga sends a forehand out: set point. Short second serve return from Rafa, but Tsonga hits his forehand wide. Second set to Rafa: 6-4.

2 aces; 0 doubles; 61% 1st serves in; 71% won on 1st; 82% won on 2nd; 6 winners; 7 UFEs; 0/1 at net

42% increase in points on second serve in the first set. Makes a huge difference.

Potty break for both players.

Both players sending shots long: 15-15. Strong hold from Rafa.

Ataraxis00: Commies understatement of the day: “There was a little lack of confidence from Nadal when this match started.”

Tsonga’s backhand clips the net and pops out: 0-15. Rafa runs down a dropper, but sends is reply wide: 15-15. Ace: 30-15. Strong hold from Tsonga: 1-1.

Rafa sends a forehand long: 0-15. Double fault: 0-30. Smart play from Tsonga – moves Rafa well and then into the net for a winner: 0-40. Good serve handcuffs Tsonga: 15-40. Tsonga hits a dropshot and Rafa’s reply doesn’t go over the net. Tsonga’ breaks for a 2-1 lead in the 3rd.

newballsplease: I’ll say this for Jo tonight, he’s got a plan and he’s damn well sticking to it come hell or high water - or Rafa. Got the break …

Serve out wide and Rafa’s backhand is well out: 15-0. Tsonga slices, Rafa nets a makeable forehand: 30-0. Forehand serve return into the net: 40-0. Tsonga holds at love for a 3-1 lead.

Tsonga’s backhand is long: 15-0. Second serve. Tsonga tees off on the return of serve and hits a backhand cross-court winner: 15-15. Tsonga’s backhand is long: 30-15. Second serve. Rafa gets a difficult shot back, but then nets a mid-court forehand into the open court: 30-30. Tsonga’s forehand is just out: 40-30. Rafa holds for 2-3.

Tsonga into the net, winner: 15-0. Rafa nets a backhand, drops his shoulders and pouts: 30-0. Return of serve winner (with his back turned to the net, no less): 30-15. Half-volley drop shot from Tsonga and he wins the net battle: 40-15. Tsonga nets a backhand: 40-30. Tsonga holds for 4-2 in the 3rd.

Second serve, but a good one. Tsonga sends up a loopy reply and Rafa storms the net to hit a winner: 30-0. Tsonga dominates from the net: 30-15. Second serve. Return of serve winner: 30-30. Second serve. Rafa sends a forehand long: break point for Tsonga. Rafa nets a forehand into the open court. He’s down a double break in the 3rd: 2-5.

Double fault: 15-15. Beautifully angled forehand volley winner from Rafa: 15-30. Double fault and Rafa has double break point. Rafa chips a return back into the net: 30-40. And then he sends one well long: deuce. Rafa gets a return at Tsonga’s net rushing feet: break point. Double fault and Tsonga breaks himself. He’s still up a break: 5-3.

Ataraxis00: Had Rafa not gagged on that last forehand this could be back on serve, but alas .. he’s still down a break.

Deep forehand from Tsonga and Rafa nets the backhand reply: 0-15. Rafa nets a forehand: 0-30. Forehand clips the net and pops well out. Triple break/match point for Tsonga. Forehand winner and Tsonga wins: 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3.

The Deuce Court: Rafa’s Rambling Presser by The Fan Child

Rafa isn’t fuming mad, but I think it’s clear to anybody watching this presser that he’s fed up. There’s so little time to rest and recover, and he seems desperate right now.

I agree. I think he’s feeling it more mentally than physically, though. He’s been on top and under a lot of pressure for a long time. I mean, he’s had a year that 99% of the guys on the tour would kill for (hell, Fed would probably like to have had Rafa’s year), he’s ranked #2 in the world, and people are still talking about it like it’s a horrible year. That’s the kind of stupid, crazy expectations he’s got to live up to and answer to over and over again in the press. That’s got to add up. Right now, I think it’s adding up to one mentally and emotionally tired Rafa. I hope he can find away to deal with that - he has in the past. I also think it’s dangerous to read too much into this match. So, I’m just going to try to do my best to take a deep breath, relax, be with colm, and have illusion that Rafa will keep fighting.

Rafa/Roger in a Round Robin match when neither of them is ranked #1. That’s a first and the match was looked forward to with much anticipation. Sadly, it did not live up to expectations as Federer blew Rafa off the court. His play was perfect; Rafa’s was loopy, short and defensive. Federer wins 6-3, 6-0.

2012 Calendar

The 2012 calendar is available! Yes, I know the poll results said I should wait until after Davis Cup, but here’s the deal: I will not have a media pass and who knows what kind of photos I can get. So, I’ve made this one available. If I get some decent photos at Davis Cup, I’ll do a second edition sometime mid-December. It’s up to you: buy now and have one by the start of the year; wait and not be sure when the update will be available.

Buy here! (Once on the QOOP site, click on the calendar cover to see what’s in store for you each month.)

And don’t forget, if you can only afford one Rafa calendar a year (instead of one for home, work, your car, your best friends house, etc), make it Rafa’s official calendar - all funds from its sale go to his foundation. You get to support a good cause and oogle Rafa at the same time. It’s a win-win!

In the second singles match at this year’s ATP World Tour Finals, Rafa took on #8 Mardy Fish. There were two big questions going into the match: how was Fish’s leg feeling; how rusty was Rafa? At the beginning of the match, Fish’s nerves were showing. By the time he got them under control, it was too late. First set to Rafa. Fish stepped up his game big time in the second while Rafa’s dropped. Rafa was looking frustrated as Fish took it 6-3. Rafa took a rather long potty break after breaking for a 2-0 lead in the third. Fish broke back and then broke again next opportunity. The set was a roller coaster – was Rafa ill? Could Fish keep up his level of play? Who was the most nervous? As sets like this often go, we ended up in a tiebreak. Luckily for us, Mardy forgot how to return serve in the tiebreak and Rafa takes the match: 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3).

Stats:

As it happened blatherings:

Mo in the chair! “If you have any questions, you know where to find me.” Hee!

Fish wins the toss and elects to serve.

sapphireswell: Rafa’s Nike check is not centered (vertically) on his headband and no one told him? :P

Rafa getting treatment for a thumb blister on his right hand? That just pop up in the warm up? Couldn’t have taken care of that in the locker room?

BenRothenberg: Rafael Nadal takes a medical timeout before the match starts. Somewhere, Jelena Jankovic jealously wishes she came up with this move first.

Mardy’s shots flying and Rafa has double break point.

Ataraxis00: I don’t think Mardy has exhaled since he threw up his first toss. Breathe.

an error from Rafa saves on break point, but on the next one, Fish sends a volley into the net and Rafa breaks to start the match. 1-0.

Fish pulls Rafa wide and Rafa nets a backhand: 0-15. Fish sends a backhand into the net and lets out an expletive: 15-15. Nice backhand from Fish: 40-30. Fish sends a forehand long and Rafa holds for 2-0.

Two good serves and a nice volley from Fish get him 3 game points. Fish nets a backhand: 40-15. An error from Rafa and Fish holds for 1-2.

Smack that forehand, Rafa! 40-0. Rafa chooses not to challenge a close first serve and then double faults. The netcord declares its loyalty to Rafa and he holds for 3-1.

Another error for Fish and it’s 30-30. Nice serve and net rush gives Fish a game point. Fish holds for 2-3.

Rafa tries a drop shot, but Fish runs it down and nails Rafa at the net: 0-15. Fish’s backhand is out…or is it? He challenges and it is well wide. Mo laughs and says, “I told you.” Rafa runs Fish all over the place until he draws an error: 30-15. With a nice forehand down the line, Rafa holds for 4-2.

Fish into the net and a beautifully angled forehand passing shot winner from Rafa: 0-15. Fish sends a forehand well long: 0-30. Rafa sends a return of serve well out: 15-30. Nice play from Fish – pulling Rafa into the net and then hitting behind him: 30-30. Fish manages to track down a high backhand and get a great angle off of it, but Rafa follows up with his own angle and draws an error: 30-40. With another forehand down the line winner, Rafa breaks to go up 5-2.

Fish sends a forehand wide: 15-0. Again: 30-0. That was Fish’s 15th unforced error. Nice forehand winner from him this time: 30-15. Ace! 40-15. Fish’s forehand is long and it’s first set to Rafa: 6-2.

36 minutes, 1 ace, 1 double fault, 48% 1st serves in, 80% won on 1st serve, 73% won on 2nd, 5 winners, 3 UFEs, 0/2 at net, 2/3 break points won

Nice serve and volley from Fish: 15-15. In fact, nice serving gets him to 40-15. Strong hold from Fish to start set 2.

diannada: Rafa hopping over the lines that time. Not just walking.

On deuce, Rafa hits a beautiful banana forehand down the line for a winner. Double fault to deuce. Rafa sends a backhand long and Fish has a break point. Fish gets Rafa on the defensive with a great cross court shot and he breaks for a 2-0 lead in the second.

0-15 and Fish lets out another naughty word. Rafa sends a forehand out: 15-15. Lovely serve and volley (a difficult one) gets Fish 30-15. Rafa’s serve return lands in the doubles alley: 40-15. Another nice angled volley and Fish is up 3-0.

Rafa winds up a forehand, but sends it long: 0-15. Beauty of a serve down the middle: 15-15. Fish mishits a backhand: 30-15. Good serve draws an errant return: 40-15. Fish does his best to run Rafa, but Rafa turns defense into offense and holds for 1-3.

Rafa not able to get his return of serve over the net: 30-0. Fish nets a forehand: 30-15. Fish sends a forehand well long: 30-30. Nice serve: 40-30. Beautiful angled volley from Fish and he holds for 4-1.

Smoking forehand winner from Fish: 0-15. That one from Rafa wasn’t bad either: 15-15. Fish’s return is long: 30-15. Fish hitting to Rafa’s forehand until he gets him out of position: 30-30. Fish hits an angle off a short ball from Rafa giving him control of the point and he doesn’t lose it: 30-40. Fish’s forehand is long: deuce. In a good position, Rafa forces a forehand and nets it: break point. Service winner and a “vamos!” – deuce. Fish sends a ball long: game point. It was a struggle, but Rafa holds for 2-4.

Rafa challenges a serve that landed smack in the middle of the line: 15-0. Drop shot winner from Fish: 30-0. Nice forehand from Rafa draws an error: 30-15. Another drop shot winner from Fish: 30-30. Rafa hits a passing shot well out and Fish holds for 5-2.

Fish up 30-0 on Rafa’s serve. Fish’s shot is out: 15-30. Rafa sends a forehand well wide and Fish has double break/set point. Fish sends a forehand beyond the doubles alley: 30-40. Rafa gets to this drop shot and drops a winner back: deuce. Fish wins a battle of the angles: break/set point. Second serve. Rafa moves Fish until he draws an error: deuce. Rafa double faults to give Fish another set point. Service winner: deuce. Again: game point. Two good serves give Rafa game point. Then the net cord shows Rafa love and he holds for 3-5.

New balls as Fish tries to serve out the 2nd. Rafa had his shot, but the forehand is wide: 15-0. Fish goes for a super-tight angle on his volley and it’s too close – into the net it goes: 15-15. Fish double faults: 15-30. Nice volley from Fish: 30-30. Fish sends a forehand well long and Rafa has a break point. Excellent serve – Rafa could barely get a racket on it. Fish easily handled the pop-up return: deuce. Good serve and swing volley winner at the net: game point. Fish thought he had an ace, it was called out. Challenge shows it was long. Again, Fish moves Rafa well and he takes the 2nd set: 6-3.

2 double faults; 68% 1st serves in; 60% first serves won; 50% 2nd serves won; 4 winners; 14 UFEs; 2/3 at net; 0/1 BPs converted

Fish’s volley is well out: 15-0. Rafa holds at love to start set 3.

Mistakes from Fish: 15-30. Holy schnitkies! From well outside the court, Rafa hits a forehand winner. Oh, I love it when he does that. Double break point. That forehand was long…he had the shot and…just long: 30-40. Forehand passing shot winner and Rafa breaks for a 2-0 lead in the 3rd. (And I scared my cat yelling.)

Rafa left the court right after hitting the winner to take a potty break? A long potty break.

SI_BTBaseline: Nadal up 2-0 and runs off to the bathroom. Not sure what’s longer, the match or the amount of time Rafa has made Mardy wait today.

Ataraxis00: If it’s the rule that you have go to before your own serve .. that would explain the timing.

Tennishead: Some confusion over Rafa’s toilet break at 2-0 but it appears the umpire asked him to take it then rather than at 1-0 when Fish was serving

Fish running Rafa and draws an error: 15-30. Rafa puts a forehand in the doubles alley and Fish has double break point. Fish’s return of serve is out: 30-40. Fish moves in on a short ball from Rafa and ends the point with a winning volley. Back on serve.

newballsplease: Nadal seemed pretty pissed off at the changeover. Gesticulating furiously. Angry with himself one suspects.

Rafa smokes a backhand and Fish can’t get the reply back over the net: 0-15. That backhand was out: 15-15. Fish pulls Rafa wide and follows that up with a winning volley: 30-15. Rafa’s lob attempt is out: 40-15. Double fault – Fish challenges and is correct. Second serve. Fish’s shot is out: 40-30. Rafa works Fish well and then finishing him off with a backhand down the line winner: deuce. Drop shot from Fish – Rafa can’t get to it in time: game point. With an ace out wide, Fish holds for 2-2.

Rafa pulls Fish wide to his forehand and draws an error: 15-0. Again: 30-0. Double fault: 30-15. Rafa sends a forehand long: 30-30. Fish into the net and hits a volley winner to get a break point. Fish breaks for a 3-2 lead in the 3rd.

Ataraxis00: Rafa looks like he’s about to share his dinner with us .. on court.

Rafa up 30-0 on Fish’s serve. Fish nets a backhand and Rafa has triple break point. Rafa gets his return at Fish’s net rushing feat and follows that up with a winner. He breaks to put us back on serve: 3-3.

Forehand return of second serve winner from Fish: 0-15. Fish nets a forehand: 15-15. Fish pushes Rafa until he runs out of time: 30-30. Rafa runs around a forehand to his detriment - Fish hits a winner into the open court: break point. Forehand winner from Rafa: deuce. Rafa hits a moonball, Fish storms it, but sends his shot out: game point. Drop shot winner from Fish: deuce. Once again, an aggressive forehand for Rafa. It sets up a lovely volley winner: game point. (Psst…you can hit those when ahead too, Rafa.) It was a battle, but Rafa holds for 4-3.

TheFanChild: This is not the Rafa that I expected to see today. He’s giving up a lot of court to Fish right now. Backing up on balls.

Fish’s shot is long: 0-15. Fish hits behind Rafa for a winner: 15-15. Rafa’s return of serve is well long: 40-15. Fish finishes out a strong hold with an ace: 4-4.

carole_brouchard: Fish finishes out a strong hold with an ace: 4-4.

Backhand winner from Rafa: 15-0. Bouncing the ball to serve, Rafa takes a weird pause and shakes his head. 30-15. Service winner: 40-15. Excellent shot from Fish: 40-30. Rafa double faults to deuce. 5th double of the match; 2nd in this set. Fish’s shot is long: game point. With a drop shot winner, Rafa holds for 5-4.

Fish sends a backhand long: 0-15. Fish pushes Rafa deep and wide: 15-15. Fish nets a ball: 15-30. Toni is up applauding and encouraging Rafa. The net cord pops up a sitter for Rafa, but he sends it back into the net: 30-30. Rafa? NOT HAPPY. That point? Weirdly awesome. Rafa has a break/match point. Let. Rafa’s return of serve is long: deuce. Return of serve lob winner? You go, Rafa. Match point # 2. But it’s saved by a nice volley from Fish: deuce. Rafa had his chances, but his passing attempt is well out: game point. Fierce forehand that Rafa can’t do a thing with and Fish holds for 5-5.

tennishead: Nadal is 9-5 in deciding sets this year while Fish is 10-7. Both players are deadlocked at 5-5 here #nailbiting

Fish paints the baseline and Rafa’s reply is out: 0-15. Rafa into the net and hits a winning volley: 15-15. That time, Fish’s attempt at a drop shot doesn’t make it over the net: 30-15. Fish nets the return of serve: 40-15. Rafa holds for 6-5. Fish will once again serve to stay in the match.

Fish holds at love. Tiebreak for the match.

Fish nets a ball - mini-break, Rafa: 2-0. Ace. Rafa challenges without conviction. Call was good: 2-1. Second serve from Rafa. Fish sends reply well wide: 3-1. Serve return from Fish was long: 4-1, Rafa. Second serve from Fish. Excellent serve well out wide: 4-2. Second serve from Fish. Forehand winner from Fish: 4-3, Rafa who serves next. Nice serve and Fish’s return sails: 5-3. Fish nets a forehand: 6-3, Rafa. Let. Rafa wins! 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3).

WTF: Gala photos

The big pre-WTF charity gala happened last night in London. Rafa showed up looking like he’d raided Verdasco’s hair gel supply. And from the size of those smiles, I couldn’t help but wonder if he’d raided something else too! I’m so glad Daveeed got the suit color right this year.

David J Nadal tweeted some news that Rafa’s shoulder started bothering him during practice. Reading through his tweets and those of MarcoCapo it appears that Rafa had been practicing serves and forehands extensively and this led to a sore shoulder. Therefore, he practiced backhands the next day. Doesn’t appear there’s fear of an injury, it’s just that he pushed things a bit much and had to reschedule accordingly.

And, let’s end with a blog entry about the Borras situation. I tried to Google mangle it, but the result just gave me an intense headache. Bee kindly translated. Please keep in mind, I have no idea how reliable or trustworthy this blog is. So, just like with the original video, grain of salt, people. Grain of salt.

The coach who won the US Open for Rafa Nadal

It is without doubt that the reason Rafael Nadal won the US Open last year was the little bit extra (Rafa’s own words) speed of his serve.

The man in the photo is coah Oscar Borras. According to this man, Nadal won the title in Flushing Meadows thanks to a private class in the summer of last year when he changed Rafael’s life.

The owner of the Torrellano Tennis Academy denounced Nadal Parera on 26th October in the court of the Primera Instancia e Instruccion of Manacor.

Borras wants Nadal to acknowlege that the improvement in his serve which allowed him to win the US Open in 2010 - which according to him gained 10kpm in speed – was thanks to a lesson that he gave in the summer of that year at the request of Toni Nadal, uncle and coach of the Balearic tennis player.

The version of the coach from the Torrellano Academy does not coincide with that of the tennis playeer, nor that of Toni himself, who tired of receiving telephone calls until in one morning training session in Mallorca with the north American circuit in sight, they had a surprise visit. “We are educated and have respect for the spectators who come to watch the training sessions” the mentor of the best Spanish sportsman in recent years, who has never closed the door of the training sessions to the public.

Rafa did not mince his words saying “not only did he (Borras) not help me in anything, but he made me lose half an hour.”

Oscar Borras went to the extreme and presented himself at the Elche University so that Eduardo Cervella, dean of the Social Sciences faculty could sign a certificate that collaborates that he was the reason that Nadal increased the speed of his serve.

Antonio Martinez Cascales, the coach of Juan Carlos Ferrero already knows all of the dirty tricks of Borras. His first encounter was when Juan Carlos was junior champion of Spain and Borras tried to steal Ferrero from him.

They later had a conversation, after the final of the Davis cup in Barcelona of 2000. In which this pirate coach commented that the serve of the pupil of Cascales was thanks to his advice. He made this known by a message during a round of the Davis Cup in 2001.

As we can see, in all sports exist people with this type of personality, but the important (thing) is that the players know that the only people they can really trust are family and trainers they have known all their lives.

Analysis of the technical change of the serve:
A trainer from the USTA claims to have received the training video where Borras changed Nadal’s serve. The coach makes an analysis of the anatomy of the serve of the Spaniard.

Inés would like to add:

The article has some errors - the session was not in the summer of last year but in October 2009

By the way, during that time he was also practising his serve with Carlos Moyà, Carlos tried to show him how he served, which is to say that Rafa has received many lessons from different people.

Rafa withdraws from Paris Masters

[caption id=”attachment_29534” align=”alignright” width=”150” caption=”Photo by Beth Wilson”]

[/caption]

Per statements on Facebook in French, Spanish and English, Rafa will not be playing in the Paris Masters tournament.

Hi all. I won’t be playing this upcoming week the tournament in Paris Bercy. It’s been a difficult decision to take but I understand that it is what I need to do right now to prepare well for the end of this season and also for 2012. I hope I can be back in 2012 to that great event in the most beautiful city in the world, and hopefully try to win it once day.

I’ve seen people tweet that Rafa doesn’t have to cite an injury in order to avoid penalties because he’s played more than 600 ATP matches, but per the rule book (page 13), he needed to meet that mark by January 1st, 2011 - which he did not. Update: - it appears I was very wrong with this as people are now saying that Futures and Challengers count. So, perhaps he does get a freebie this year. Woot!

1.08 Reduction of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Commitment

A. A player’s number of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments shall be reduced by one (1) tournament for reaching each of the following milestones:

1) 600 matches* (as of 1 January of the commitment year)
2) 12 years of service
3) 31 years of age (as of 1 January of the commitment year)

If all three (3) conditions are met then the player has a complete exemption from the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 player commitment.

The first Year of Service shall be the first calendar year in which a player has competed in at least twelve (12) tournaments offering ranking points.

* From 2010 only main draw singles matches played in the following events will be used in the player’s match count for purposes of this rule.

ATP World Tour
Barclays ATP World Tour Final
Grand Slams
Davis Cup
Olympics

Challenger and Futures matches played prior to 2010 will remain on the player’s record as relates to this commitment reduction rule.

B. A player who is eligible for a reduction of his ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments must be in good standing with the ATP in order to receive a reduction of required ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments

Even if he does face a zero-pointer and “will be suspended from a subsequent ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event which will be the next highest point earned ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event within the next 12 months” (source), I think it’s going to take players sucking it up and taking such penalties to show they are serious about wanting to change the schedule. Oddly enough, Paris might suffer a lot from this in the future because of a schedule change - it’s being moved to the week before WTF next year. I can easily see players whose position is already secure for the WTF (like Rafa), pulling out of Paris in order to be well rested (and injury-free) for the year end finals.

And remember, skipping Paris worked pretty well for Rafa last year. He had a very good WTF tournament.

Welcome to November!

Info:
The Paris draw will take place Friday at 6:30pm local time. According to the tournament site, we’ll be able to follow the draw live online.

Voting for the ATP Fan favorite singles player and doubles team is now open. You have to be on Facebook to vote, however.

Very interesting video about the coaching session from the guy who’s suing Rafa to get recognition for his contribution to the 2010 USO serve:

(Posted by xstf.)

I know I’m only seeing one side of the situation here (and thus, my conclusion is not fair), but if I’d taken the time to help someone re-work something from the ground up and then they passed off the change as a “change of grip” with a tiny shrug almost like it was made on a whim…I might be upset too. Would I sue? No. I personally think the only reason to do that would be to get attention. But I think I would definitely grind my teeth and curse at the TV screen every time I heard that story repeated. I do think that it’s interesting that there’s video of Borras perhaps helping start the process that would lead to the improved serve. It was, however, up to Rafa to implement that change and move forward with it. Now, if he could just re-teach his muscles what they learned last year… (and it makes me want to look at serves in slow-mo from this year to see Rafa’s arm position…or maybe I just want to look at Rafa in slow-mo).
